LC: There are praline fans, and there are not. They are a pretty specific melt-in-your mouth concoction that are achingly sweet, but are a signature of New Orleans and important in its history as a cane sugar port. So expect to bring back a gift or two from any visit here. Made from butter, brown sugar, cream, and pecans, it’s that simple. Sure, some might modify these brown blobs with the likes of chocolate, peanut butter, coconut, or even rum. Some are soft and chewy, some brittle and crisp. Yet you have to try at least one praline—pronounced PRAAW-leans, Not PRAY-leens, by the way—during your time here. It is the law. Skip those corn syrup and condensed milk impostors found at the drugstore candy aisle and head to Pralines by Jean right on the picturesque St. Charles streetcar line. Jean makes ‘em fresh daily, with cupcakes to boot.
